New Evidence of Earthquake Precursory Phenomena in the 17

چکیده
Significant advances, both in the theoretical understanding of rupture processes in heterogeneous media and in the methodology for characterizing critical behavior, allows us to reanalyze the evidence for criticality and especially log-periodicity in the previously reported chemical anomalies that preceded the Kobe earthquake. − 3 and SO −− 4) concentrations of groundwater issued from deep wells located near the epicenter of the 1995 Kobe earthquake are taken as proxies for the cumulative damage preceding the earthquake. Using both a parametric and non-parametric analysis, the five data sets are compared extensively to synthetic time series. The null-hypothesis that the patterns documented on these times series result from noise decorating a simple power law is rejected with a very high confidence level.

Recent results of the research for preseismic phenomena on the underground water and temperature in Pieria, northern Greece
The recent results of the research for earthquake precursory phenomena on the underground water level and temperature at the area Pieria of northern Greece are presented. The analysis of our observations in relation to the local microseismicity indicate that underground water level variations may be considered as precursory phenomena connected to the local microseismic activity in the area of P...
متن کاملDiscrete Scaling in Earthquake Precursory Phenomena: Evidence in the Kobe Earthquake, Japan
— We analyze the ion concentrations of groundwater issuing from deep wells located near the epicenter of the recent earthquake of magnitude 6.9 near Kobe, Japan, on January 17, 1995. These concentrations are well fitted by log-periodic modulations around a leading power law. The exponent (real and imaginary parts) is very close to those already found for the fits of precursory seismic activity ...
متن کاملValues of b and p: their Variations and Relation to Physical Processes for Earthquakes in Japan
This work reviews some results obtained already for the variations of the seismicity parameters b and p in different seismogenic and tectonic regions in Japan. We bring as well new evidence that the time and space changes in seismicity parameters are correlating well with the crustal structure and/or some parameters of the earthquake process. In the first part of the paper we show that several ...
متن کاملChanges in the ultra-low frequency wave field during the precursor phase to the Sichuan earthquake: DEMETER observations
Electromagnetic phenomena observed in association with increases in seismic activity have been studied for several decades. These phenomena are generated during the precursory phases of an earthquake as well as during the main event. Their occurrence during the precursory phases may be used in short-term prediction of a large earthquake. In this paper, we examine ultra-low frequency (ULF) elect...
